EXPERIENCE
Dr. Shalowitz combines many years in clinical practice and management with academic experience in both business and medical schools. He has decades of experience with utilization review for inpatient care and appropriateness for outpatient services. Much of that experience was for Medicare managed care plans. He also served as medical director for a Medicare certified home health agency.
As a board-certified internist he practiced medicine and was managing partner of a primary care medical group with six locations in the north and northwest Chicago. The group was the core of a several hundred physician IPA which successfully participated in dozens of full-professional risk, capitated contracts, including three Medicare products. He gained experience in contracting with payers, specialists and facilities (including hospitals and surgicenters); managing quality compliance activities; adjudicating and paying claims (up to $3M per year); and overseeing two hospital joint ventures. During this time he served for seven years on the board of Alexian Brothers Medical Center (Elk Grove Village, IL), where he was founding chair of its subcommittee on quality and compliance.
Dr. Shalowitz was also a professor and Director of the Health Industry Management Program at the Kellogg School of Management for 28 years. In addition to his academic administrative activities, he taught courses on the US and international healthcare systems. In addition to his business school teaching, for 30 years Dr. Shalowitz taught the core health care systems course for Northwestern’s MPH degree program where he has been a professor of internal medicine and then preventive medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine. Since 2006 has also taught courses in Northwestern’s Master’s Program in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety.
